Why or why not? Roger : I believe I am a leader. In my professional career, I was given many tasks by my immediate supervisors tasks as simple as scheduling a meeting amongst several agencies to completing a report or survey critical to the daily operations of the hospital from a legal and administrative standpoint. With little or no supervision, I am always able to complete all assignments as well as follow-ups, if necessary. Howard : What characteristics distinguish you from other leaders within your institution? Roger : While I did not hold an administrative role at the hospital, I was considered a team player and at times will take the lead in getting my tasks or other assignments completed. While working at the hospital for many years, I have encountered many vendors, patients and customers, who expressed their appreciation for my kind and prompt responses to their questions, assistance with payments or resolving a legal matter. If I could not assist them, I would direct their call to the appropriate person that can resolve the matter. My ability to communicate with the vendors, patients, or customers always resulted in a satisfactory outcome. My motto is your work will speak for itself. Getting the job done is all good but providing reliable and accurate information makes a difference. You just dont want to be recognized for getting the task completed but it is most satisfying when you know the information provided is accurate and no one will question your credibility. Howard : How do you view your organization and the role of leaders in it? Roger : Health care is very critical to the residents of the Virgin Islands. In order for the hospital to be able to provide care on a daily basis, it starts with the Chief Executive Officer at the helm and a support team consisting of persons such as the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Legal Counsel, VP of Facilities Management, and VP of Performance Improvement. Each one of these individuals have a role to play in managing the departments that fall under their purview. Without these leaders, the hospital will not be able to provide the services needed to care of the sick or maintain wellness. Howard : What challenges do you and other leaders face in your institutional role? Discussion: Puerto Rico Leadership Interview Analysis Report Roger : In any workplace you will face challenges. Whether it is from the boss, a co-worker, equipment failure, limited supplies or money to sustain your operations. In a healthcare organization, you are faced daily with workplace grievances, employees not taking precautionary steps to avoid malpractice cases, equipment failure, limited supplies and mostly important, the cashflow to pay your vendors, complete capital projects and sustain your employee payroll. For me, my challenges ranged from a supervisor at times not taking responsibility for her shortcomings to employees not doing their part to ensure a task is completed. Howard : What opportunities does your institution have for developing leaders? Roger : The hospital is a teaching institution. It grooms our nurses, physicians, and allied health workers. While they do offer continuing education and training seminars for managers and supervisors, there is not much opportunities for the lay man to excel unless you attend an institution of higher learning to obtain a degree in the medical field. Howard : Can you tell me about a time when you demonstrated leadership skills? Roger : After Hurricane Irma, the hospital underwent a series of events that resulted in the evacuation of patients to Puerto Rico and the mainland, to include sick, hemodialysis and cancer patients. In the aftermath, my co-worker and I were given the task of tracking the patients from the time they left the hospital until their arrival at the accepting facility. Once we found the patient, we then had to inform the patients family of their location and the attending physician. At times, I would have family members calling me late at nights or early in the mornings for updates. In some instances, I have had to reassure many family members who became very distraught of not knowing the whereabout and condition of their love one that we were doing everything possible to find them. Howard : How do you respond to criticism? Roger : No one favors criticism whether it is constructive or not, but over the years I have learned that constructive criticism can only enhance your work quality and make you a better person. One should seriously reflect on the criticism and find the good rather than the bad. Howard : What advice do you have about leadership for graduate students entering the field? Discussion: Puerto Rico Leadership Interview Analysis Report Roger : A good leader delegates and appreciates. A good leader accepts criticism and accelerates. A good leader is not one that thinks only about himself but others. It is not about what you have accomplished on your own but what you were able to accomplish with the help of others. To be a good leader is to be humble. Howard : Anything to add? Roger : A person should never choose a career because of its pay. A person should choose a career that they share a passion for especially if you will be doing that career for 30+ years. While you will face obstacles throughout your career, you will never regret or be bored with what you enjoy doing the most.
