Research Essay: This assignment will be based on a topic of
your choice relating to the ancient Greeks. All choices of topic must be approved by the
instructor through the research essay proposal and bibliography assignment.
The research essay must propose and defend a clear thesis statement about the topic.
The thesis statement must be presented in the essay’s introduction.Defence of the thesis must
rest upon evidence gathered from at least four scholarly sources (two of which must be
published books, not counting the course textbook). The same standards regarding type and
quality of source material described above for the essay proposal and bibliography assignment
also apply to the finished research essay. Remember that encyclopedias of any kind and
websites geared to the general public are not acceptable for university-level research. Do not
cite such sources in your finished essay and do not rely upon them for your research. Essays
demonstrating use of such sources will receive a lower grade, or even a failing grade,
depending on the extent to which you use them.
Length of essay: The finished essay must be 5-7 typed double-spaced pages in length,
not counting title page and bibliography. An essay presenting less than 5 full pages of doublespaced text will receive a reduced grade. Pay close attention to the format requirementsfor
font style and size, margin size, and line spacing outlined in the section titled “Formatting
Written Assignments” under the Course Policies section below.
Source citations: Essays must feature a proper system of documentation employing
footnotes and a bibliography. These must be formatted in accordance with the “notes and
bibliography” style of documentation demonstrated in the Chicago Manual of Style. For

Note that an acceptable footnote citation in history mustinclude a reference to the
specific page number in any paginated source where you found information that you used in
your essay. This applies to all usage of source material, whether quoted directly or expressed in
your own words. Please pay attention to pagination in all e-books and electronic versions of
scholarly journal articles.

Assignment Deadline:Research essays will be due at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, June 19.
Essays will be submitted to the research essay drop box on Moodle.
Late Submission Penalty: Except in cases of illness or family emergency, any research
essays submitted after the deadline will be penalized 5 % per day late (weekends included).
Late submissions may be accepted without penalty if they result from illness orfamily
emergencies.
