Master’s Prepared Nurse Interview
Introduction
Nursing is a marketable field especially with the growing health care system. According to the
American Nurses Association, master’s prepared nurses are at a higher level of learning and have
adequate skills and experience required in the field thus making them more competitive. This is
an interview of a master’s prepared nurse who was promoted to be a Nurse Manager. This
interview aims at demonstrating how being a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) graduate
prepares one to undertake a higher role in the field of nursing. I settled on interviewing a nurse
manager because I was sure of her qualification for that post and was interested in knowing how
she rose to the highest rank despite the challenges, her source of inspiration and also her take on
education as a dream fulfiller.
Overview of Master’s- prepared nurse career
After graduating from Brookline College School of nursing, Phoenix in 2000, her career took off
at surgical group practice clinic, Cypress from 2001 to 2004 and was given a number of roles to
play so she did not have a specific one. She was able to gain some experience in the field but
kept complaining of being overworked. This made her go back to school and chose to specialize
on pediatrics. She later on got a job at the Arizona university hospital as a pediatric nurse and
this made her love her job. She worked with other nurses to ensure her clients were served to
satisfaction. While working at the university hospital, she enrolled for evening classes in
Licensed Vocational Nurse Program at Everest College and graduated in 2007this earned her a
position as a Nurse In charge and made her yearn for knowledge so she decided to enroll at
Chamberlain College of Nursing, phoenix for MSN Clinical Nurse Specialist and graduated in
2012 as a nursing expert for the pediatric unit with highly specialized nursing care services. She
became a Clinical Coordinator, patient and staff educator, case manager in the same hospital and
in 2015 she was given the role of a Nurse Manager in the same hospital. She currently holds that
position.
Reasons for graduate education
She chose to do master’s in Nursing so as to attain better job opportunities and earn a higher
salary, to be equipped with advanced knowledge in population health analytics, services
management and evidence based practice to improve systems, to increase specialization and
acquire roles such as director and to prepare herself for clinical leadership, research and
advanced practice roles.
Present position and role
As a nurse manager the interviewee is contented with her position and enjoys performing her
roles which are; assessing performances of staff nurses, mentoring nurses and other medical
personnel, develop education programs, contribute to staff professional development, interview
and hire nurses, develop budgets for the department, and ensure quality care is delivered to
patients besides working to improve patient care. She also discourses evolving trends, embrace
inventive ideas and work towards the shared goal of excellence, proficiency and quality in
practice while contributing to the success of the organization. According to the interviewee, her
role as a Nurse Manager goes beyond nursing; they interact with other staff who care for the
environment, offer nutritional support, support nursing staff and is also in charge of personnel in
other disciplines.
Importance of graduate education to a Nurse Manager
According to the interviewee, despite being a graduate and holding such managerial positions,
her level of education enables her look for ways of adding administrative tasks to her role since it
is a breeding ground for planning, direction and control. The master education also gives her
adequate skills to manage multifaceted operations besides varied staffs. Earning a Master’s
degree qualifies her for teaching position to the nursing staff and also nursing students; it also
prepares her for further studies at another level and also helps her prepare for the increase in
complexity of her job.
Pearls of wisdom
According to my interviewee, nursing is such an interesting job although some people are
negative about it. Despite this, she insisted on doing it passionately. She emphasized on the first
rule of nursing “if you jack with it, it is wrong” this is the rule which will be there to save one.
She also talked about asking questions and seeking a second opinion on a patient’s condition and
in cases when someone tries to make one look foolish respond in a polite manner and thank
them, be honest if you do not have an answer to a question say it instead of fumbling, be
confident even if you afraid, accept that there are stresses accompanied with the nursing
profession but this reduces as you gain experience and also as a new nurse, people who have
been in the profession will do mean and inappropriate things to you, their actions should not be
a reason to give up but be strong and prove you can make it. On education, the interviewee
discouraged getting too comfortable with the little one has, she insisted on being innovative,
knowledge seeker and purpose to be at a better place the days to come. Her last words were”
make knowledge and books your great friends.”
In conclusion, from the interviewee some of the competencies in the field are ensuring all
procedures are affiliated with latest professional guidelines and review and update when
regulatory practice standard change. From the interview, nursing is a constant learning
process, everyone makes mistake but we should purpose to learn from our shortcomings,
trust your instinct and the only way of being a better person in the nursing profession is
by increasing your level of education without dwelling on your humble beginning.
